We're thrilled to welcome Fort Martin Scott in Fredericksburg to the Texas Historical Commission as our 39th state historic site! Established by the U.S. Army in 1848, it was Texas' first frontier fort and was known as the gateway to western Texas forts.
Visitors can explore the guard house, jail, and a mile-long loop trail that blends history with natural beauty. A gift shop is coming soon. Add Fort Martin Scott to your next Fredericksburg getaway!

A visit to El Mercado, or Historic Market Square, in San Antonio, is an immersion in the historic and cultural impact of Hispanic Texans to this community. Established in the 1820s as an open-air market for farmers, it has evolved into the largest Mexican market in the United States, featuring over 100 locally owned shops and restaurants.

Submit your ideas for historical markers that fill gaps in history and promote diversity of topics. The THC utilizes marker application funds to sponsor these markers representing an untold or undertold aspect of Texas history. Through this program, the THC assists County Historical Commissions and sponsors of chosen topics by paying for the foundry cost of a historical marker or by completing the research necessary to submit a qualified application.
Submit the individual, group, event, building, or site in your community that you think should have a historical marker!
The Art Deco-style pillar at Monument Hill State Historic Site in La Grange marks the tomb of Texan soldiers killed in the 1840s. This weekend, Saturday, September 14, the site is hosting a remembrance event.
Join descendants of the Dawson and Mier expeditions and members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Sons of the Republic of Texas for a memorial ceremony that will include guest speakers, wreath laying, and a gun salute.
Texas Archeology Month (TAM) is coming up! Each October, TAM features both in-person and virtual events, such as archeological fairs, lectures, exhibits, demonstrations, and tours in collaboration with partners across the state. These programs—such as various events at our Mission Dolores, Kreische Brewery, Sam Bell Maxey House, Washington-on-the-Brazos, Caddo Mounds, San Jacinto Battleground, Goodnight Ranch, and Bush Family Home state historic sites—are an opportunity for Texans to better understand the depth and richness of the Lone Star State’s heritage.
