Widely regarded as one of the most notable Jewish figures of the past century, Natan Sharansky’s name was a rallying cry for the Soviet Jewry movement. Jailed for his human rights activism and efforts to immigrate to Israel, Sharansky spent nine indescribably difficult years in the Soviet Gulag. He was released in 1986 and went on to serve as a minister in several Israeli governments, as Deputy Prime Minister of Israel, and—most recently—as Chairman of The Jewish Agency for Israel. Sharansky is the only living non-American to have received both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was honored by AJC in 1987, one year after his release from the Gulag and a few hours after he addressed Freedom Sunday for Soviet Jewry, the historic rally in Washington organized by AJC’s David Harris. Join us for a wide-ranging conversation with this human rights icon and Jewish hero.
