‘Breath of fresh air’: Kamala Harris’ presidential run inspires Minnesota’s South Asian community
[[link removed]]
Sourav Bhunia plans to volunteer for a political campaign for the first time in his life.
The Shoreview resident, who immigrated from India to the United States in 1986, will campaign this year for Vice President Kamala Harris.
The fact that Harris is half-Indian will “probably have a little bit of resonance” in motivating the Indian diaspora to vote this November, he said. Political attacks on Harris’ Indian and Jamaican heritage calling her a diversity candidate will only heighten that, Bhunia said.
“The fact that she is racially out of the mainstream, just like Obama, has a different kind of appeal,” Bhunia said. “It’d be nice if the country was truly colorblind … but we are not, so it’s kind of a breath of fresh air, and something different.”

Abortion rights a race-defining issue in Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District
[[link removed]]
A rare open Minnesota congressional seat is up for grabs this November. Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District is made up of the western suburbs of Minneapolis. It's currently represented by Democrat Dean Phillips, who is leaving Congress after unsuccessfully running for the Democratic presidential nomination against President Biden. The Democratic candidate is Dr. Kelly Morrison, a long-time Twin Cities OB-GYN, former state representative and senator.
One of the 2024 race-defining issues is abortion rights, pitting Morrison and her OB-GYN experience against Jude, who opposes abortion rights.
"As the only OB-GYN in the legislature, I was proud to help lead the effort to protect and expand access to reproductive health care here in Minnesota," said Morrison. "I'm ready to take both my medical and my legislative experience to Washington to help lead the effort to protect access to reproductive health care for all Americans."

Two Minnesota natives, high-profile national activists, aim to shift abortion debate
[[link removed]]
A woman walked into a bar in St. Paul, looking for her old friend. Lizz Winstead — a comedian, co-creator of “The Daily Show” and founder of the Abortion Access Front that uses humor to destigmatize abortion. “Hi, friend!” said Amy Hagstrom Miller, the founder, president and CEO of Whole Woman’s Health, which provides abortion care at six brick-and-mortar clinics, including in Bloomington, and virtual care in five states.
Destigmatizing abortion is a shared goal for these two prominent abortion rights activists, both Minnesota natives who have risen to the front ranks of the legal abortion movement. That kind of frank talk around a once-taboo topic reflects a new strategy for Democrats in an election where they hope to move votes over concern for dwindling access to abortion.
“We want to shift the language from a framework of judgment and regret to a framework of love and freedom,” Hagstrom Miller said.
