John,

Today is International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day.

Celebrated as a holiday in many countries around the world, May 1st has long been an important moment to honor workers and build movements for social change. Back in 1884, for example, the American Federation of Labor started the movement for an eight-hour work week on May Day.

In this moment of crisis today, we must again put workers first.

As farm workers and grocery workers and delivery workers each day work to guarantee our food security, we demand a living wage.

As building and construction workers are called back to the job—often without personal protective equipment and social distancing—we demand enforcement of safe working conditions.

As nurses and health care workers and emergency medical technicians risk their lives each day in an overburdened and under-resourced private healthcare system, we demand universal, comprehensive Medicare for All.

As retired teachers and countless senior citizens struggle to pay the bills and afford prescription medicine, we demand a retirement with dignity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the conditions of workers to the forefront. Many of us have newfound appreciation for how interconnected we are as a community.

As we thank workers this May Day, let’s also commit fighting for every worker in the days to come.

In solidarity,
Mike Siegel
