Friend, we’re here to put the question, “Do we still need Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)?” to rest.

Our 2024 HBCU Economic Impact Report, Transforming Futures: The Economic Engine of HBCUs, commissioned by the UNCF Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute, is a comprehensive, data-driven analysis designed to quantify the substantial contributions that historically Black colleges and universities make to their students, local economies and the nation.

HBCUs are not only educational institutions—they’re powerful economic engines that fuel growth, innovation and opportunity in their communities and beyond. The 2024 report underscores their indispensable contributions to the economy and their role in shaping the future workforce.

But don’t take our word for it—click here to read the report and get the facts for yourself.

HBCUs are pillars of strength. Their nurturing environments produce outstanding graduates and future generations of leadership. Whether you are an alum, a family member of a student or a graduate, or have an HBCU in your community, this report shines a light on the accomplishments these institutions help make possible.

Not only do we still need HBCUs, but the United States’ economy depends on the contributions of these historic institutions of higher learning. HBCUs generate $16.5 billion in direct economic impact nationally.

HBCUs continue to punch above their weight, despite gross underfunding, threats of violence and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To learn more about the impact HBCUs make on our economy, and to see the data in action, watch our new video that breaks down the need-to-know facts.

We need HBCUs, and they must be supported in order to deliver positive outcomes. It's up to all of us to raise our voices in support of HBCUs. We must hold our elected leaders at all levels of government accountable and demand equity in education.

HBCUs Forever!
