Nobody likes it, but it’s the truth: TV advertising matters.

For a lot of voters, TV ads are the main way they learn about a political campaign. TV ads are also expensive, so TV ends up being a big part of most campaigns’ budget.

It’s doubly true in Michigan, where we have 11 media markets to reach and one of the most expensive — and crowded — media markets in the country in Detroit. In fact, no media market has seen more spending over the past few weeks than Detroit. If you’re in Michigan you’re probably being bombarded with constant attack ads.

As you can imagine, increased demand also leads to higher rates to purchase that TV advertising time. In the past month, rates for TV time have as much as tripled.

But not all TV ads are created equal. The FCC guarantees that candidates can buy TV ads at the lowest rate during the 60 days before an election. Outside political groups, like super PACs, can be charged at the higher rates — as much as 3 to 5 times more than candidates. And we are now in that 60 day window.

That is why, when you are considering making a donation to advance Democrats’ hopes, your money will go the furthest when you contribute directly to a candidate like this one.

But even though we are able to buy TV ads at a lower rate than outside organizations, the flood of spending means that TV ads are still very expensive — even more than we were anticipating. So with that in mind, will you consider an donation to our campaign, so that we can continue to reach the voters we need to win?
