Hi John -
I'm writing to you from a hotel lobby a few blocks from The White House after a whirlwind few days in our nation's capital. I’m glad to report that our work to achieve permanent protection for the Boundary Waters is gaining incredible momentum!
Here are just some of the highlights from our trip:
*
We
joined
forces
with
like-minded
conservationists
from
across
the
country
to
build
political
power
and
advance
crucial
legislation
through
the
newly
formed
National
Wilderness
Coalition.
*
We
hosted
a
successful
supporter
event,
which
has
helped
to
build
awareness
around
our
work.
*
Our
team
met
with
key
elected
officials
and
their
staff
to
discuss
the
urgent
need
to
protect
the
Boundary
Waters.
*
We
also
took
the
time
to
educate
key
members
of
the
press
about
the
serious
threats
facing
the
region.
*
Finally,
we
led
well-received
lobbying
meetings
in
both
House
and
Senate
offices.

However, despite these positive developments, we are still up against some serious attacks on the Boundary Waters from anti-wilderness proponents in Congress who are seeking to revoke the current 20-year ban on sulfide-ore copper mining next to the BWCA. This is why we urgently need your continued support to keep fighting for this special place [[link removed]] .
Right now is an excellent time to make a commitment to the Boundary Waters. One of our long-time advocates has generously pledged $60,000 to match gifts in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Ac t – a crucial piece of legislation that established the National Wilderness Preservation System, including the Boundary Waters. This means that every dollar you contribute will be automatically doubled [[link removed]] , making your gift go twice as far for the BWCA!
Can we count on you to make a 2X gift today? [[link removed]] Your contribution will help us continue our important wilderness advocacy work in our nation’s capital, which will in turn help us make the Boundary Waters a forever wilderness by protecting this beloved landscape for generations to come.
