John, it’s Rep. Wesley Harris, your Democratic Nominee for Treasurer. My friend Nida said I could reach out and tell you about myself and my race.

In 2018, I made history as the first Democrat to represent my district in the NC House. The odds were against me: my opponent at the time had been hand-picked by GOP leadership, and they were hoping to expand their supermajority. Instead, we put our heads down, fought hard, and broke their supermajority.

We won.

So I’m no stranger to an uphill political battle—which is a good thing, because that race in 2018 has nothing on my campaign this year for North Carolina State Treasurer.

I’m up against an ultra-conservative opponent who made his fortune managing massive stock portfolios for Wall Street billionaires. It’s not so different from Nida’s experience in 2022 when shady billionaires spent BIG to defeat her progressive agenda.

Nida and I know that wins are possible—but only if people like you and me fight for them together. I’m so proud to have the support of Commissioner Nida Allam. Like me, Nida is a fighter who’s never shied away from a tough race, and like me, she grew up in a North Carolina where the American dream was alive for all of us, no matter our background.

Every opportunity I ever had—from the speech therapy my twin sister and I had as kids to my time at UNC—came from living in a state that believed a brighter future was possible. The North Carolina I grew up in invested in communities. In families. In us.

Our state has lost its way since I was young (a decade of Republican legislative control will do that). But Nida and I have spent our political careers working to make North Carolina the beacon of progress we all know that it can still be.

Right now, though, North Carolina is a 50/50 state, and we’re going to have to fight tooth and nail for every single vote.
