[link removed] [[link removed]] Friend,

Twenty–three years ago today, Americans all across the country watched in shock as the Twin Towers fell. We watched, paralyzed in fear of what was happening and what was to come.

Every year, September 11th is a reminder of those we lost on that fateful day two decades ago, and our ability to come together when we need each other the most.

In a moment of uncertainty and pain, we saw how even in tragedy, there is hope.

Hope in the first responders who rushed headfirst into danger, displaying an incredible bravery that we honor decades later.

Hope in the neighborhoods that came together in empathy and compassion for families who lost loved ones.

Hope in every person who stepped up to take on a role, big or small, and helped our nation heal.

But while some responded with courage and hope, others responded with fear and bigotry.

And we watched as our leaders launched our nation’s longest war. Giving in to hate and xenophobia, they scapegoated and ethnically profiled entire Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian communities all over our country.

But unity is the antidote to fear.

So today, we mourn all who fell on September 11th and stand with all who were victimized after the fact.

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to healing, security, and unity in all of our communities.

In reflection,
— Monica Montgomery Steppe
