Today, there’s only one thing to talk about - September 11, 2001 and remembering the worst American tragedy in our country’s history.
September 11th was the worst terror attack on this country, claiming more lives in one day. It demonstrated unbelievable heroism by our first responders, running into buildings to save lives and many perished.
On September 11, 2001, I was on my way to New York City to go to work. I was just arriving at Grand Central when we heard the news. As a physician, I went to my local hospital to see if I could help. I spoke with hospital coordinators, emergency coordinators at the time and their best suggestion was we’re all set and to get out of New York City.
It was hours before I could reach my wife and my kids and tell them that I was OK and many of us had those feelings about our loved ones. Where were they? were they ok. There was no transportation and I started walking north like so many others. I made my way up to Harlem and the Metro North started running again.
In the days following September 11th, I’ve never seen this country more united. This was not about race, religion, political, sexual orientation. It was about all Americans being united.
September 12th was one of the most unifying days in our country’s history. All Americans united for one common cause to build ourselves up and launch a war on terror. For years we say on September 11th we were divided; on September 12 we were united.
It is unity that has been missing in our country for many years as Americans. We need to put our differences aside. We need to unite and fight our enemies domestic and abroad. We need to be united here in the US and have conversations with those we think we may disagree with as I have found we always have a lot more in common when we come together and talk with each other.
Today on September 11th as we remember 23 years have gone by and terror still exists everywhere. We are subject to terror attack in the United States and our allies are subject to terror attacks throughout the world.
I pray that we never have another September 11th in this country.
For all of us, Never Forget September 11th and in the current climate - Never Again is Now. It is critical to support our first responders and allowing them to do the jobs that they are meant to do and were born to do. They run into a fire while most run from it.
Today is not a political day. Today is a day of remembrance and tomorrow on September 12th, let’s all strive to be united once again and carry on the mission started on September 12, 2001. We can do that by
Finding the the common ground between us; and
Healing this divisiveness that persists for no reason.
I’m a physician and I spent my entire career and continue to spend my career healing my patients, listen to my patients and treating them.
Let’s make this anniversary the most united one we can as a country and continue the healing process.
