Maine has the chance to become the first state to eliminate super PACs. A citizen initiative on the November ballot would allow Mainers to limit annual contributions to super PACs from individuals, businesses, and other PACs to $5,000 in a calendar year.

By definition, super PACs exist by accepting unlimited contributions, which, with certain super PACs, have included multi-million dollar gifts. This initiative seeks to address quid pro quo corruption and the appearance of corruption created by these contributions. In other words, a $5,000 contribution limit would effectively eliminate super PACs.

Will you help us put an end to super PACs in Maine by joining a virtual phone bank on Thursday, September 26th? You do not have to live in Maine to participate.

Passing this initiative is the first step in overturning the disastrous 2010 decision by the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit in SpeechNow v. FEC, which created super PACs in federal elections. It puts us on the road to a democracy without the influence of big money.

We successfully passed the first ordinance to abolish super PACs in 2017 in St. Petersburg, Florida, and we filed a lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission on behalf of Members of Congress and others to challenge the SpeechNow ruling.
