Dear Advocates,
Today, we solemnly commemorate the heroes and lives lost in the tragedy of September 11th, now twenty-three years ago. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and courage displayed by so many in the face of unimaginable danger. We pay tribute to the firefighters, police officers, journalists, and countless civilians who exhibited extraordinary bravery. Among them, we remember individuals like Betty Ann Ong, a Chinese American flight attendant whose courageous actions helped prevent further catastrophes and altered the course of history.
As we reflect on this day, it is crucial to acknowledge how the aftermath of 9/11 has continued to shape our communities. In recent years, there has been a disturbing rise in hate and discrimination against South Asian and Muslim individuals, fueled by stereotypes and fear. This prejudice is deeply unjust and harmful, as it wrongly targets entire communities based on the actions of a few. It serves as a stark reminder that the fight against intolerance and bigotry is far from over.
Amid ongoing conflicts and crises, we are reminded of the importance of upholding human rights and the dignity of every individual. We must reject blanket vilification and scapegoating that targets entire populations. It is our collective responsibility to resist perpetuating hate and discrimination and to stand in solidarity with those who are unfairly targeted.
OCA remains steadfast in its commitment to combating discrimination through education, advocacy, and fostering a more inclusive society. Today, as we honor the victims and heroes of 9/11, let us also reaffirm our commitment to justice, equity, and the fundamental human rights of all people. Together, we must work towards a world where everyone can live free from prejudice and fear.
Join us in this day of remembrance as we strive for a more just and compassionate society.
In solidarity,
Thu Nguyen
