John, with just weeks to go, most Americans are focused on the election and so are we. But here at Common Cause we're also tracking a secretive plot that could have long-lasting consequences that go beyond even this historic election.
Their goal: exploit a little-known section of our Constitution to force a “constitutional convention” – where every single right you and I hold dear could be taken away from us.
It would be totally unprecedented in American history – and could permanently write the far-right donors pushing this effort’s agenda into our Constitution without any accountability, transparency, or safeguards.
It might sound far-fetched, but what if I told you that the secretive groups pushing this campaign have already signed 28 states onto their scheme? That means just SIX states are standing between us, and an utter constitutional crisis.
A national abortion ban. Dismantling civil rights. Repealing the Affordable Care Act. That’s just a sampling of what the extremists and special interests pouring millions into this campaign hope to achieve – IF they are allowed to get their way.
That’s why I’m so proud Common Cause is fighting back. Just this year, we helped stop Idaho from signing on and lobbied to get New York’s convention call rescinded. But this fight will take our vigilance and hard work year after year – because our opponents aren’t running out of money anytime soon.
Even as I write to you, we’re still fighting 57 active bills calling for a convention. To defeat the millions of special interest dollars behind them, we can’t slow down for even a second – we must maintain this momentum in 2025, 2026, and onwards.
