John,
One of my heroes growing up in Jeff City, a man who gave us our first dishwasher, was a Marine in Vietnam. He took me around the local Marine Corps League and taught me the meaning of service: selflessness, sacrifice, doing the right thing when no one is looking and expecting nothing in return.
Twenty-three years ago today, we saw the same selflessness and sacrifice in the first responders who ran toward danger instead of away. Those brave men and women, who were a part of something bigger than themselves, showed our country — and the world — what service truly means.
And while the smoke was clearing at ground zero, everyday heroes continued showing the meaning of service, as we as a country came together in solidarity and strength.
It’s a story I’ve seen time and time again in my own community growing up — neighbor helping neighbor, stranger helping stranger, friend helping friend. That’s where the strength of our nation comes from. And we honor the sacrifice of the first responders on September 11, 2001, by remembering their courage and selflessness and continuing to show up for one another every day.
