New York is failing, badly, to meet its own mandates under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Governor Hochul is questioning the law altogether and has even squashed congestion pricing, the best hope for shoring up mass transit and reducing transportation emissions in NYC. What's going on? How can we fight back? Join us in person this month at First Unitarian's magnificent, accessible sanctuary at 121 Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights to learn more.

The Plastic Free Committee's in-person meeting

The plastic free workgroup aims to educate on and eradicate single use plastics from everyday use. Sign the petition for the Climate Change Superfund Act
Modeled on the federal Superfund toxic waste law, the Climate Superfund Act holds big polluters financially responsible for the damages they have caused. It would require big fossil fuel companies to pay $3 billion a year for 25 years for extreme weather damage repairs, resilience infrastructure upgrades, and programs to protect New Yorkers from flooding, extreme heat and hurricanes. New York City alone is facing billions in costs for protecting the subways and mitigating storm damage to our shorelines, for example. The NYS Senate and Assembly passed the bill this past session but Governor Hochul has to respond. Sign the petition urging her to sign the Climate Superfund Act.
Sign the petition for the TREES Act
The TREES Act will prohibit New York State state agencies from purchasing goods linked to tropical deforestation. It has been passed by majorities in the Assembly and Senate two years in a row and Governor Hochul has refused to sign it, choking the democratic process and arresting progress on climate solutions that don't cost the taxpayer a dime. Signing this petition will email the Governor to urge her to sign this important legislation into law. This is a small step for New York State to take with a massive global impact on rainforest ecosystems, climate change, and indigenous communities. Sign the petition now and make your voice heard!
Voting organization of the week: Vote Forward
Writing letters to voters is one of the most effective ways to help increase election turnout and Vote Forward empowers grassroots volunteers to write personal, heartfelt letters to potential voters with an easy-to-use online platform. The majority of letter-writing campaigns are nonpartisan campaigns, supporting their core social-welfare mission, which focus on mobilizing potential voters in communities that have historically been marginalized in the political process—such as people of color, women, and young voters. Anyone with access to an internet connection and a printer can sign up, download and print letter templates, and write to voters from anywhere.
FROM OUR FRIENDS AND ALLIES
Stop Blowing Smoke rally
Sunday, September 15 from 12 - 2 pm
350Brooklyn was part of the coalition that fought for last year's Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA). But the state isn't doing what the bill calls for: build publicly-owned renewable energy facilities to meet the state's own climate goals. The Public Power NY coalition will rally at Brooklyn's Grand Ferry Park to demand a real plan for public power. Look for 350Brooklyn signs to join in and meet other in person!
Youth Climate Strike
Friday, September 20 at 2 pm
On September 20th at 2pm, join thousands of students in an intergenerational march to take to the streets to demand an end to the era of fossil fuels. In NYC Fridays For Future will have three demands: that Governor Kathy Hochul sign the Climate Change Superfund Act, that Wall Street divest completely from petrochemical companies, and that fossil fuel companies cease any and all new oil and gas projects in the Gulf South. There will be Fridays For Future groups from around the world striking that day. In NYC, the strike takes place 2 days before the start of Climate Week. We’ll meet at 2pm at Foley Square, start marching at 2:15, and have a brief rally at the end from 4-4:30 where we’ll hear from an array of speakers coming to New York from across the globe.
