MPAC’s Response to Tonight's
Presidential Debate
September 10, 2024
Tonight’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump failed to address the majority of Americans who continue to demand a ceasefire. It was at times a chaotic display that demeaned and disrespected the thousands of lives lost in Gaza since October 7th. While Vice President Harris called for an immediate end to the war, she doubled down on the Biden administration’s policy of shipping weapons to a regime killing Palestinian families every day. President Trump launched into a bizarre tirade about “blowing up” a region rather than offering any serious statement or solution to the violence. Just days after Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old Turkish-American citizen, was executed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) during a peaceful protest, neither candidate chose to say her name. And despite the Biden administration’s executive order to sanction those who kill civilians in Gaza, there was no mention of enforcing this commitment.
Our government has ceded moral authority in the Middle East to Netanyahu, and foreign interests and lobbies are shaping U.S. policy. American Muslims must keep defending their civil rights and dignity as billionaires and PACs spend millions to silence students on campuses and elected officials in Congress. This debate has only reinforced a painful truth that we all must recognize: two tiers of citizens exist in the United States—those backed by powerful lobbies in Washington, and those who are not.
Regardless of the political landscape or election outcome, MPAC will remain steadfast in its mission to advocate for justice, equality, and the protection of civil rights for American Muslims. We will work to ensure that all Americans are shielded from the forces of oppression, bigotry, and violence. Our work is for a just and peaceful future for everyone in this country, regardless of faith or background. The path forward is one of unity, and MPAC will always strive to lead in that direction, no matter how challenging the politics and circumstances may be.
