After spending a few weeks away from the Swamp for a productive district work period, Congress is officially back in session. Many legislative priorities await our arrival — but one has a fast-approaching deadline that lawmakers cannot ignore.
That priority is government funding, which expires on September 30th. Meaning if Congress fails to pass either all 12 appropriations bills or a short-term spending package before this time, the government will enter a shutdown.
As a conservative member of the House Appropriations Committee, I believe House Republicans should have finished the remaining single-subject spending bills for Fiscal Year 2025 in order to cut spending and advance policy wins. Yet given the upcoming deadline and the Senate’s inaction on the appropriations process, Congress will inevitably consider a stop-gap funding measure known as a continuing resolution (CR).
You might be shocked to read this…but in this one particular situation, I strongly believe a CR — with a few critical requirements added — is the right thing to do.
Let me explain.
If the Uniparty lumps together and passes all 12 FY25 appropriations bills, known as an omnibus, they will set reckless spending levels and enact radical policies until next September. Therefore, an incoming Trump Administration would be hamstrung for its first nine months in office. For this reason, any CR should be extended into early next year so a future Trump Administration can influence 2025 spending and policy. This would avoid what’s known as a “lame duck” omnibus — where lawmakers ram through a pricey, Big Government Socialist spending bill, which would preserve Democrat spending and policies well into the next administration, before leaving town for Christmas.
Additionally, a continuing resolution is “must pass” legislation; the government will shut down without the passage of a CR. Consequently, House Republicans have powerful leverage in this funding fight. Conservatives must use this critical leverage to achieve major wins for the American people. That’s why we’ve fought to attach the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to the stop-gap funding bill.
If you recall, House Republicans passed the SAVE Act in July with bipartisan support. This crucial legislation simply requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote — because only Americans should vote in American elections. Given the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing illegal invasion, it’s essential that we ensure Democrats cannot carry out their ultimate goal of turning illegal aliens into illegal voters.
For these reasons, I will support and fight for a CR that extends government funding to March of 2025 and includes the SAVE Act.Â
Please don’t hesitate to contact my office if you have any comments, questions, or concerns about the current funding battle. While this legislative process is certainly messy, it is undoubtedly better than maintaining the Swamp’s status quo. Through it all, I’m honored to represent you, your voice, and your values in Washington.
