vote

Dear Friends,

I issued a proclamation making this week Voter Preregistration Week [ [link removed] ] in Michigan to encourage eligible Michiganders to preregister to vote.

Our democracy is strongest when every eligible citizen can make their voice heard at the ballot box.

That’s why here in Michigan, we’ve taken action to protect everyone’s constitutional right to vote. I signed laws that established nine days of early in-person voting, protect equal access to the ballot box, and increase voter registration opportunities, including a voter preregistration system that helps young Michiganders be ready to vote.

Voter preregistration empowers our teenagers to get involved, helping us build a stronger democracy for every Michigander. No matter who you are or who you’re voting for, I’ll keep fighting against voter suppression and make it easier for you to cast your vote and have it counted.

Check out the info below on how to register and preregister to vote and learn about your options for voting in the upcoming elections.

Sincerely,

Gretchen Whitmer

Governor

*How to Register and Preregister to Vote*

Right now, more than 126,000 young people in Michigan are eligible to preregister to vote in 2024.

Preregistration allows teenage Michiganders 16 years and older to take proactive action and ensure they are enrolled to vote as soon as they turn 18.

If you are between the ages of 16 and 17.5, you can now legally preregister to vote.

You can preregister online at Michigan.gov/Vote [ [link removed] ], or print, complete, and mail the form to your local clerk’s office. You can also contact your local clerk [ [link removed] ] to request a form be mailed to you. If you preregister, you can participate in early in-person [ [link removed] ] or absentee voting [ [link removed] ] for an election, as long as you will be 18 on or before the date of that election.

Preregistration spurs interest in civic engagement and enables young voters to get informed and excited about voting in local, state, and federal elections. This Preregistration Week, I encourage parents, family members, and teachers to talk to teens about voting, and I encourage younger voters to talk with their parents, educators, and peers about how to make their voices heard in our democracy.

For eligible Michiganders 18 years of age or older, you can register online [ [link removed] ], by mail, or in person 15+ days before an election. Within 14 days of an election, and on Election Day, voters may only register by visiting their local clerk’s office to register in person with proof of residency documentation.

*Historic Work to Expand Voting Rights Across Michigan*

This week and beyond, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist and I are committed to expanding access to the ballot box by ensuring every eligible Michigander has the opportunity and information to enroll as a registered voter.

Last year, I signed a historic package of bills [ [link removed] ] that improve election efficiency, increase voter registration opportunities, and protect equal access to the ballot box, ensuring every Michigander’s voice is heard in our democracy.

Going further to protect Michigander’s right to vote, I signed:

* Bipartisan legislation [ [link removed] ] to ensure absentee voter ballots from military and overseas voters are counted if received up to six days after an election.
* Bills making it easier to vote [ [link removed] ] in Michigan by requiring state-funded absentee ballot drop boxes and nine days of early in-person voting, establishing a permanent absentee ballot list, and more.
* An executive directive to boost voter registration [ [link removed] ], instructing all state departments and agencies to identify and assess potential opportunities to help eligible Michiganders register to vote and gain access to reliable information about voting.

I have also vetoed several bills that would make it significantly harder for Michiganders to participate in our democracy.

I’ll keep working alongside Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to ensure every eligible Michigander has the ability to cast their vote and make their voice heard.
