Dear Supporter,
Jim Roosevelt, the grandson of Franklin D. Roosevelt, knows better than anyone how important Social Security is to Americans like you. It’s one of the most enduring legacies of his grandfather’s presidency. But this election, it’s also on the line like never before.
That’s why Jim Roosevelt asked if he could personally get involved in the National Committee’s urgent fight to protect this lifesaving program from hardliners in Congress who are dead set on slashing your earned benefits.
And in a recent letter Jim sent to National Committee supporters, he urged them to sign onto a petition to help convince Congress to stop messing with Social Security: ( [link removed] )
James Roosevelt, Jr., grandson of President Franklin D. Roosevelt
“As you know, this is a high stakes time for Social Security. And so I simply cannot stress this enough …
If you and other seniors don’t speak out right now to challenge powerful opponents of Social Security calling for privatizing the program, cutting
the annual COLA, raising the retirement age, even “sunsetting” the program which would require Congress to approve Social Security every five years …
If you and other seniors don’t speak out right now to challenge powerful opponents of Social Security calling for privatizing the program, cutting the annual COLA, raising the retirement age, even “sunsetting” the program which would require Congress to approve Social Security every five years …
… this Congress could be the one that rapidly ushers in painful cuts and radical “reforms” that could forever change this program as we know it. And Social Security could be relegated to the dustbin of history!
That’s not something I could bear to see. Not at a time when so many Americans are counting on their earned benefits just to make ends meet.”
If you agree FDR’s legacy — which continues to empower millions of older Americans — is worth fighting for then please add your name to the National Committee’s EMERGENCY PETITION TO CONGRESS: “Protect — Don’t Cut — Social Security!” ( [link removed] )
National Committee President and CEO Max Richtman and Jim Roosevelt ( [link removed] ) plan to show to lawmakers in Congress and the candidates running for political office in November that seniors across the country depend on their earned benefits and oppose any cuts to these programs.
According to Jim Roosevelt,
“Social Security has been an easy target of so-called ‘deficit hawks’ in Washington who would much rather chip away at seniors’ earned benefits than reverse decades of unfair (and unpaid for!) tax policies that benefit wealthy Americans and huge corporations. Fortunately, my grandfather helped structure the program to make it hard to cut or privatize Social Security.
Because Social Security has its own dedicated income stream from the payroll tax, we don’t just trade it off against education or defense or other important priorities. My grandfather famously said, ‘With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my Social Security program’.”
Jim Roosevelt understands that lawmakers can’t just change or cut Social Security without risking the livelihoods of millions of retirees and working Americans.
So please, sign our EMERGENCY PETITION today to let your elected officials in Washington, DC know that you rely on Social Security, you want retirees’ benefits protected, not cut, and you will vote for candidates on November 5th who uphold your values! ( [link removed] )
Sincerely,
Max Richtman
President & CEO
