Just over one month ago, officials declared famine in a displacement camp hosting hundreds of thousands of people in the North Darfur region of Sudan.
Across the country, 25.6 million people — more than half of the country’s population — are facing acute hunger.
Among the hungry are more than 611,000 pregnant women. These women face a heightened risk of life-threatening pregnancy complications from malnutrition, and their babies are more likely to be premature or underweight.
As lives hang in the balance, we are doing everything we can to help, including providing prenatal care and nutritional support to pregnant women — but we urgently need your support to scale up our response.
This is a critical moment. Please, will you make a gift today and deliver lifesaving sexual and reproductive health care in Sudan and wherever support is needed most?
In times of crisis like these, women and girls are among the most vulnerable.
Mothers are skipping meals so their children can eat. Families are resorting to child marriage to cope with shortages of water, food, and fuel. And women and girls face skyrocketing sexual violence, including trafficking and exploitation, every day.
Nisreen, one survivor of violence, received the lifesaving support she needed at a UNFPA Safe Space.
“I thought it was the end for us, but then we found hope in the most unexpected places,” she said.
In addition to caring for Nisreen, emergency gifts from supporters have already helped UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency:
- Distribute 73,359 Dignity Kits
- Assist 4,646 safe births
- Support 93 health facilities, including hospitals and mobile clinics in conflict areas
- Operate 71 safe spaces for women and girls
In this moment of extreme need, your gift has the power to offer critically needed relief to the women and girls of Sudan and beyond. Please, don’t turn away. Will you rush an emergency gift now?
Thank you for not looking away from this crisis.
