As a young lawyer, I joined the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division to fight for consumers. As Colorado’s Attorney General, I am leading several important antitrust cases to protect consumers from big corporations, including the landmark case against Google.
In August, the federal district court judge in our antitrust case against Google concluded that “Google is a monopolist and acted like one.” He explained that Google’s use of exclusive contracts–designed to lock rivals out of the marketplace–violated our Nation's antitrust laws. Over the last few years, Google has paid tens of billions of dollars over the last few years to block its competitors from getting a foothold in the marketplace and offering new choices to consumers. Next, the district court will determine what steps are needed to restore competition and drive innovation in the Internet search and Internet search advertising markets, thereby providing benefits to consumers. Over the months ahead, we will evaluate the best path forward and argue our case to the judge.
In this case, we led a bipartisan multi-state coalition. The judge called the lawyering in the case, including our tremendous team, “first-rate.” His opinion, moreover, relied on evidence and analysis our team advanced, making clear that our hard work made a difference in this landmark case.
