Only Citizens Should Decide Our Fate The Fight on the Hill to Protect Election Integrity Conservative lawmakers in the House, under the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson, are aligning to push the SAVE Act as part of a stopgap measure to extend government funding to secure our November elections and prevent yet another nightmare Omnibus spending package predictably in the works by Democrats in both Houses. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy, requires citizens to prove their citizenship when registering to vote. While it’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote, lack of enforcement and clear federal procedural law across the states leaves indefensible gaps in the system. As evidenced in the four states that have performed their federal duty to clean their voter rolls, Alabama, Texas, Ohio, and Virginia, all found non-citizens on their voter rolls and discovered that a large percentage of them have a voting history requiring criminal referrals to the Attorneys General offices. However, this leaves the status of the other 46 states in question. The House passed the SAVE Act in July with strong Republican backing, and grassroots pressure has been mounting to push the Senate into action. Democrats, along with President Biden, who strongly supports ‘Every Vote Counts’ are pushing false arguments that existing laws adequately protect against noncitizen voting and that the SAVE Act could inadvertently purge eligible voters from the rolls. The bill’s supporters assert that no one would be denied the right to vote, as they could cast a provisional ballot until proof of citizenship is verified. By combining voting reform with the funding debate, Republicans are betting on high public support for election integrity, a signature issue for former President Donald Trump. Rep. Chip Roy is confident about this approach, saying, “If Democrats are unwilling to fund the government into March ... and their big hang-up is the fact that they want noncitizens to vote, let them take that to the American people. They want to shut government down over that, that should be on them.” For conservative hardliners, including the House Freedom Caucus, this is the moment to push their agenda and fight for a long-term CR that keeps government funding stable while aligning with their legislative priorities. Extending the financing into 2025 avoids a potentially tricky budget negotiation during the final months of Biden’s presidency. It allows a future Republican administration to pursue deep cuts and reforms without hindrance. Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to stand firm, balancing the demands of hard-right conservatives and the need to avoid a government shutdown, a challenging but critical task for GOP leadership. Whether this bold legislative gamble will succeed or lead to further gridlock remains to be seen. However, the message from conservatives is clear: the fight for election integrity, particularly proof-of-citizenship voting, is now central to their policy agenda. Let the Left defend a position that allows non-citizens to vote while the majority of even Democratic voters are waking up to the realities of unchecked immigration. The tide is shifting. Americans from all political backgrounds are now demanding secure borders and mass deportations, and they certainly don’t want illegals voting for more handouts!
