ATF sat down with Jo Ann Kocher [ [link removed] ] to discuss her experiences as ATF’s first female special agent (in 1972) and one of the first female agents ever in federal law enforcement. Reminiscing over her past experiences, Kocher discussed her career as an ATF trailblazer and shared her hopes for women in the law enforcement field.

In the U.S., federal law prohibits certain individuals from legally purchasing firearms. These restrictions are designed to prevent guns from falling into the hands of those who might pose a danger to themselves or others. A straw purchase is the illegal buying of a gun by an individual, a “straw buyer,” on behalf of such a person. As the primary governmental agency tasked with reducing the risk to public safety caused by the criminal possession and use of firearms, ATF aggressively pursues those engaged in straw purchasing [ [link removed] ].

ATF’s Law Enforcement Leaders of America (LELA) program brings together an experienced panel of executive criminal justice professionals to introduce the next generation of public safety leaders to the field. The program has been presented to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other college campuses – offering students and faculty the opportunity to engage with panelists on how to succeed in law enforcement and support their communities.
