Across the country, renters are organizing the largest rent strike in U.S. history
John,
Does the end of the month prompt anxiety? For millions of Americans, the burden of paying for housing costs in the bay area was hard enough even before the pandemic.
Tomorrow, on May Day, renters across the country will organize the largest rent strike in U.S. history. I'm looking forward to participating in a May Day car caravan supporting housing rights at Pier 50.
This morning, I had the chance to rejoin hosts Krystal Ball & Saagar Enjeti on Rising on the Hill. Our discussion addressed how our campaign has responded to the Coronavirus pandemic, and Pelosi's disappointing unwillingness to heed survivors of sexual assault.
We also discussed an important proposal by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to suspend mortgage & rent payments during the pandemic. I support that proposal. Nancy Pelosi does not.
As the end of the month approaches, our campaign faces a key fundraising deadline. Thanks to the support of over 18,750 donors from across the U.S., and the votes of over 33,000 San Franciscans, I'm the first Democrat to ever challenge Pelosi in a November election.
Congress may have predictably put banks before renters & homeowners, but it's not too late to send a signal to Washington by replacing the generation of leaders who have failed to meet the needs of the moment.
