On the same day as the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, my son’s public high school had a campus-wide lockdown because of a threat to the school.
I called him when school got out and I asked him how it made him feel. He just shrugged it off and said he was used to it.
That is chilling.
We have failed our kids so badly that they just expect to live in a state of constant risk. Many have simply internalized the constant threat of violence and can’t imagine a different world. It’s hard to calculate the damage that this baked-in trauma causes in our kids.
Before I’m a senator, I’m a parent, and this reality breaks my heart. I know we don't have to choose this reality for our children. They do not have to live in a world where they run for their lives as assassins hunt them in school hallways.
We — as parents, friends, neighbors — can choose a different reality this November. We can elect candidates who take our kids’ safety seriously. But I need your help to do it.

I want to be very clear about the stakes of this election.
Donald Trump is screaming from the rooftops that he doesn’t care about anything other than how much money the gun industry makes.
He’s told survivors of mass shootings to just “get over it.”
He told the NRA he was “the best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House.”
If Donald Trump is in the White House, the world our kids inherit will be far less safe. Each of us has a role to play in making sure that does not happen.
