Lecture Tonight, Upcoming Workshops, and Highlights THE LEVY NEWS Our Site Research Events Publications   CONTRIBUTE     September 9, 2024   HIGHLIGHTS   Dear Friends, This month, we welcome scholars from around the globe at our Inclusive Development Conference, taking place from September 11–13. This event marks the fourth in our ongoing series of workshops on gender and macroeconomics, organized by the Levy Economics Institute with the generous support of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The conference will highlight cutting-edge research on the structural factors that drive socioeconomic disparities and will showcase the Levy Institute’s innovative methodologies on gender, poverty, and well-being. We are particularly delighted to welcome world-renowned economist and long-time friend of the Institute, Jayati Ghosh, as our keynote speaker. I’m also pleased to announce that, in the coming year, the Levy Institute Graduate Program will be expanding its support for incoming graduate students in our MA and MS programs through new scholarships and research assistantships. Alongside our existing named scholarships for those interested in the work of Hyman P. Minsky and Wynne Godley, we will now offer additional support to students with research interests in institutional economics, gender, and labor issues. As we continue to advance our mission, we invite you to support the Institute. Your contributions enable us to further our research and educational initiatives and expand our impact on policy. Thank you for your continued engagement with our work. Sincerely, Pavlina R Tcherneva President Levy Economics Institute EVENTS   A workshop organized by the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College with the generous support of The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The goal of this workshop is to explore ways to advance the integration of gender into economic analyses in order to promote inclusive development and policymaking. We will bring together diverse visions of how and why gender and intersectional inequalities need to be integrated in assessing economic wellbeing and formulating development policy agendas. Join us September 11–13, on Zoom by registering now. REGISTER Join us TONIGHT at the Blithewood Conference Room or on Zoom. Contact Belle Cheves at 845-758-7714 or e-mail [email protected] for information. For updates on future events in the Speaker Series, see tinyurl.com/LevyGenderSeries This presentation will explore the multifaceted challenges and implications of care work in Brazil, drawing from several comprehensive studies conducted as part of the Made Research Center on Macroeconomics of Inequalities. I will introduce the Social Infrastructure Care Indicator (IISC), developed to assess the availability and inequality of paid care services across Brazil using data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADc) for the 4th quarter of 2023. The findings reveal significant regional disparities, and a contrast between the dominance of the private sector in care provision and the public's reliance on state services. Additionally, I will examine results and insights from a study on the "cost of motherhood," and other studies on care in Brazil, which shed light on the complex interplay of gender, race, and socioeconomic status in shaping care dynamics. Collectively, these studies underscore the urgent need for policies that redistribute care responsibilities, enhance public care infrastructure, and support women’s economic participation. I aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of care work in Brazil and its broader social implications, advocating for systemic changes to address these entrenched inequalities. REGISTER GRAD PROGRAMS   Learn More Now Backed by over 30 years of proven policy impact, the Levy Institute Graduate Programs in Economic Theory and Policy provide innovative approaches to topics such as time use, poverty, gender, student debt, and employment that other programs neglect, encouraging students to evaluate policies, examine behavior, and dig deeper into the social phenomena that underlie economic outcomes. Along with a challenging academic environment, the Levy Institute programs also offer a supporting and caring community where students benefit from sharing their research with faculty and their peers to promote academic exchanges and intellectual collaboration.
