As I grew up, I had no idea what the future held, but I had a pretty good idea of the kind of man I wanted to be. My dad — he’s the one with me in that photo — was a founding partner in North Carolina’s first integrated law firm and a fierce advocate for all people’s civil rights.

Even when his office was firebombed by racists determined to cling to the status quo, my dad and his partners didn’t back down.

His commitment to advancing justice and equality helped me steer my own path.

Eventually, I joined the North Carolina Department of Justice, first as an intern. So was Anna! That’s when we met, and we got married 3 years later. 👇

We wanted to raise our family here and model the same values that our own parents taught us.

Since my days as an intern, I’ve served North Carolinians in every way I can — as a teacher, an economic developer, a consumer protection lawyer, a state Senator, and Attorney General.

I’ve taken on big fights. I’ve stood up for our most fundamental rights and freedoms. I have defended the interests of North Carolinians at every turn.

Now, I’m the Democratic nominee for Governor of North Carolina — and I’m locked in the most competitive gubernatorial race of 2024.
