Supporters like you secured a great turnout in parliament this week

Dear friend,

This week, just days after MPs returned from their summer break, I’ve been in parliament speaking at a special event on the global debt crisis – to make sure debt cancellation is high on the government’s agenda.

Over a thousand of you emailed your MP to invite them to this event. Thanks to these messages, we had an incredible turnout – with many MPs telling us they’d come because of the emails they’d had from supporters like you. Development Minister Anneliese Dodds was one of them, and I spoke to her about the urgent need for debt cancellation for lower-income countries in crisis.

We’re facing the worst global debt crisis in thirty years – it's right that politicians should be taking this issue seriously. As I explained to MPs, 54 lower-income countries are trapped in debt right now, and it’s destroying lives. Only last week, new research showed how debt cancellation could save the lives of 60,000 mothers and children globally and allow 5 million more children to go to school. [1]

Ahead of the election, supporters like you helped secure a commitment from Labour to “tackling unsustainable debt”. As MPs returned this week, we made sure that the debt crisis was one of the first issues they heard about. Watch the video to find out more about what happened – and how MPs responded.

Millions of people around the world are being denied justice because their countries are trapped in debt. A new debt justice law in the UK would help lower-income countries in crisis to get debt cancelled. And because 90% of these debt contracts are overseen by UK law, politicians here have a critical role to play in tackling the debt crisis.

Together, we’re making sure that awareness of the debt crisis is growing among MPs. It has been great this week to see how many MPs are keen to push the government to stick to its pre-election promise to tackle the debt crisis.

None of this could have happened without your support, sending emails, signing petitions, donating, and making sure our campaign can’t be ignored. Thank you!

In solidarity,

Heidi Chow
Executive Director of Debt Justice
