The COVID 19 disease has touched nearly everyone but has hit some people especially hard. In southern Arizona, and elsewhere along the U.S. Mexico border, the pandemic means many immigrants are facing severe deprivation.

  • Millions of tax-paying workers are ineligible for the stimulus money simply because they use a taxpayer identification number rather than a social security number.
  • Thousands of immigrants fleeing dangerous conditions in such countries as Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador are stuck along the Mexico-U.S. border, unable to cross and exercise their legal right to seek asylum.  Lacking the funds and fortitude for the danger-ridden journey back home, they wait, seeking refuge in crowded shelters, living on the streets, doing what they can to survive.
  • Others are imprisoned in detention centers, where crowded, unsanitary conditions make the likelihood of catching COVID 19 especially high.

Many of these hungry, tired, people still harbor hope.  What they need is help.

In a recent letter to the Green Valley News, Green Valley resident Sandra Rooney wrote: “How often have you said to someone that you’d like to decide how the government uses your tax money? Now’s your chance.”

It is your chance!  As Sandra did, you can give your stimulus money to any of the organizations listed here.   Some feed people, others provide shelter, and still others provide much-needed legal assistance.  Consider making a donation today.  Your gift will be appreciated – and used.
