We heard recently about high school students who went to visit Alaska’s Juneau Icefield, excited to see the massive glaciers they’d seen in movies like Titanic. But upon arriving, they were shocked to find only a “small, dinky piece of ice” where a glacier once stood.
The reality hit hard: our glaciers are disappearing faster than expected. Since 2005, at least 64 glaciers have completely vanished from Alaska.
Globally, the situation is just as alarming as Alaska. Venezuela has officially lost its last glacier, New Zealand has seen 264 glaciers disappear, Switzerland’s over 1,000 small glaciers are now gone, and East Africa has less than 2 square kilometers of glacial ice left.
This isn’t just a loss of ice, it’s a clear signal that we’re entering the next phase of global warming: sea level rise and total glacial collapse.
