Gov. Justice announces plan to call special session; details to be released Monday

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) his plan to convene the West Virginia Legislature for a second special session this year, with the official date to be revealed on Monday.

The Governor has been demanding a special session to deliver another personal income tax cut, implement a childcare tax credit, and address other important issues.

“We’ve had plenty of time to plan for this special session,” Gov. Justice said. “It’s time we stop kicking the can down the road. I’ve promised Toby and Edith—the people of West Virginia—that we’re going to try and get another personal income tax cut across the finish line. On Monday, I’ll officially announce a date so we all know where the goal line stands. I’ve told everybody that I’m going to try and get another 5% income tax cut, and I’m sticking to my word. There’s no reason to sit on surplus dollars when we can put them to good use and deliver real relief to West Virginians. We have a huge surplus to deal with from last year, and now is the time to use it for something good. We also need to move forward with implementing a meaningful childcare tax credit. We’re not going to sit on the sidelines to wait for something to happen. It’s time that we MAKE something happen.”

Gov. Justice issues statement on death of coal miner in Logan County
[link removed]
Gov. Justice issued ([link removed]) the following statement after learning about the death of a coal miner in Logan County.

Gary Chapman, 33, of South Williamson, Kentucky passed away from injuries sustained this evening at the Mountaineer II Mine near Sharples, West Virginia.

"When we lose a miner, it’s not just a loss for the community, but a loss for the entire State of West Virginia," Gov. Justice said. "Mr. Chapman’s loss is a powerful reminder that we should always have a deep gratitude for every one of our coal miners. They are the ones who keep our nation running, and I can promise that we will never forget Mr. Chapman’s dedication and service. Cathy and I are holding him and his family close in our hearts, and we ask that you keep them in yours as well during this time.”

The incident is still under investigation by the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. This marks the fourth mining fatality in West Virginia this year.

Gov. Justice holds groundbreaking ceremony for section of Beckley Z-Way in Raleigh County

Gov. Justice joined West Virginia Transportation Secretary Jimmy Wriston, P.E., and Raleigh County Commission President Greg Duckworth for a groundbreaking ceremony ([link removed]) to celebrate the start of work on the southern leg of the Beckley Z-Way project near Beckley.

The project, a combination of two separate construction contracts, is designed to alleviate congestion on US 19 through the communities of Beaver, Shady Spring, and into Beckley. Both projects are funded through Turnpike bonds as part of Gov. Justice's $2.8 billion Roads to Prosperity program.

"Today is a long-awaited milestone for the Beckley community, Raleigh County, and West Virginia," Gov. Justice said. "After two decades, we are finally making the Beckley Z-Way a reality. Growing up in Southern West Virginia, I have traveled these roads more times than I can remember, and I look around today and could not be more proud. Every single one of us has pulled the rope together to make this much-needed project happen, and I could never thank you enough. There's no stopping us now—we are running right through the finish line."

Gov. Justice cuts ribbon on Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail, linking lodge to Hatfield-McCoy Trails system

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) the opening of the Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail, linking the lodge to the popular Hatfield-McCoy Trails system.

This new 4.6-mile trail connects to the Bearwallow Trail, allowing riders to stay at the Chief Logan Lodge without trailering their units to the trails. It also provides a unique and scenic experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Under Gov. Justice’s leadership, over $250 million have been invested in West Virginia State Parks.

“West Virginia’s state parks are the crown jewels of our state, and we’ve made it our mission to ensure they continue to shine for generations to come,” Gov. Justice said. “The new Chief Logan State Park Connector Trail is a perfect example of how we’re enhancing our parks to provide even more opportunities for people to experience the natural beauty of West Virginia. This trail is not just a connector—it’s a gateway to adventure, offering our visitors a unique perspective on the amazing landscapes that make our state so special.”

Gov. Justice announces start of Gauley Season
The nation’s best whitewater rafting begins this weekend

Gov. Justice announced ([link removed]) that Gauley Season has officially begun. The Gauley River National Recreation Area will offer whitewater rafters from around the globe an opportunity to take on some of the world's top whitewater runs in a picturesque fall backdrop that is practically heaven-sent.

Each fall, more than 40,000 people flock to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to experience this once-in-a-lifetime thrill during the normally six-week period, but this year, seven-week period, also known as Gauley Season.

“West Virginia’s whitewater rafting is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before,” Gov. Justice said. “We’ve even received accolades from big-name publications about how amazing whitewater rafting is here. With Gauley Season starting today, I want to personally invite folks to come experience the short-lived season for themselves. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime West Virginia adventure you just can’t miss out on.”
