This week, the Justice Department filed money-laundering charges against two Russian state media network employees for plotting to influence the 2024 presidential election using American social media influencers.

SEE MY FULL ANALYSIS

Whether the American social media influencers were a part of the scheme or not, this is not at all surprising. If anything, what is surprising is that the Russians weren't doing it earlier. If you go back just a little bit in history, to the 1940s and 1950s, the communist Soviet Union realized that Hollywood had a big influence on American opinion. Taking control of the studios and getting Soviet actors and scriptwriters into positions of power was a major communist effort to infiltrate Hollywood. And a few people stood up to it, like Ronald Reagan, a union man and head of the Screen Actors Guild, who pushed back on Soviet influence. So this idea of influencing by using the media ,is nothing new and a longtime method in the Russian playbook and I'm not at all surprised they're doing it in
this election. There are probably other elections worldwide that they are meddling in that we haven't discovered yet.

Going back into Russian history, Vladimir Lenin used to call people who are used as mouth pieces to influence political outcomes 'useful idiots’. Unfortunately, there are a few useful idiots in Congress today on the Republican side and I'm sure the Russians are trying to take advantage of it. It's really a two-fold outcome for the Russians:

1. I think Russia does want Donald Trump to be president. Unlike Trump's opinion of his relationship with Putin, I believe Putin thinks Trump is an easy mark. Putin would be happy to flatter and make deals with Trump.

2. But perhaps even more significantly, because this kind of propaganda undercuts Americans' faith in our own institutions. We know propaganda and meddling from our adversaries turns Americans against each other. People who hate Donald Trump will now say, 'More Russian interference, we knew it was true all along!” and die-hard Trump supporters will say, 'They've politicized the Justice Department again and here’s another prosecution of good people just trying to help Donald Trump out.” This sowing of discontent and distrust is very significant and can be enormously impactful to weaken America.

Now looking forward to Election Day, I am not going to vote for anybody with whom I have a principled disagreement or think they’re not fit to be president. It's a sad commentary on our political process that we have such inadequate candidates.

I don't agree with the idea that somehow the Constitution is such a weak piece of paper that Donald Trump is a threat to it. Donald Trump will cause a lot of damage if he's elected, but he is not an existential threat to Democracy. If you really believe that, you must think this country isn't worth much. We've gone 235 years with this Constitution, and we've survived a lot worse than Donald Trump. Comments like these undercut those who are trying to see Trump put in his place.
