Dear Mr. xxxxxx:
Good Saturday morning.
August is over and we are already one week into the month of September. As you may know, each August, Congress goes into a month-long district work period. This is a tradition that began in the late 1960s. If you're interested in learning more about this tradition, you can click here.
But while Congress is in not in session, it does not mean we take a 30-day vacation. We use the month as a district work period. So, this month's newsletter is dedicated to highlighting the many visits my staff and I made across the district and across Alabama.
Visit by Member of the United Kingdom House of Lords
In late July, we had a visit by Lord Ross Kempsell, who as his name suggests, is a member of the House of Lords over in the United Kingdom. Lord Kempsell's visit was part of an annual exchange program with our British counterparts. With the United Kingdom being are strongest ally in the world, this is a good opportunity for them to see the America outside of the large cities. We showed Kempsell almost every corner of the Fourth District from the Shoals to Mentone over in DeKalb County. While he was in the U.S., he also met with President Trump.
Defense Contractor Locating in Walker County
I spoke at the groundbreaking and dedication for a new military testing range in the Townley Community in Walker County. Global Technical Systems, which is connected to the Army and Restone Arsenal in Huntsville, is opening up a state of the art testing range called the Defense Munitions Proving Grounds. I was proud to help bring this facility to Walker County and it will have a positive economic impact on the area going forward.
United States Flag for Hanceville Elementary
Earlier this year, Hanceville Elementary in Cullman County completed a new lunchroom for the elementary students. Before this new school year started, I was asked to present the school with a United States flag that had flown over the Capitol in Washington. I presented the flag to the lunchroom staff, along with Principal Stacie Olinger, Assistant Principal Troy Taylor and County Superintendent Shane Barnett. The flag is now hanging in the lunchroom.
Industry Expansion in Cullman
Back on August 7th, the REHAU Plant in Cullman held a ribbon cutting for the new expansion of their facility. REHAU is a leading global provider of polymer-based innovations and systems in the construction and automotive sectors. This new expansion is an investment by REHAU of $66 million. I joined local leaders and Governor Ivey for the ribbon cutting.
New Weather Station in Bankhead Forest
In Winston County, I got to tour a new weather station that has been placed inside the Bankhead Forest. This facility monitors the weather and will also serve as a weather balloon launch site. The weather data here is geared toward better weather predictions for farming, aviation, and for the weather forecast you see on TV. It will be fully operational in October.
DCH Medical Center Expansion
In Tuscaloosa County, I got to tour new construction underway at DCH Medical Center. The tour was given by Harrison Construction and the Alabama Associated Builders and Contractors. DCH serves Tuscaloosa County, and other outlying counties in our district like Fayette and Walker. In January, the Fourth will take in even more of Tuscaloosa County, including the Fosters and Ralph communities.
Foundry Farm Holly Pond
We paid a visit to the Foundry Farm facility in Holly Pond. The Foundry helps people overcome addiction. As you know, we have a very large drug addiction problem in our state and nation, particularly surrounding opioid addiction. I enjoyed getting to see this facility that helps people change their lives. One of the mottos on their wall is "Where Lives are Reshaped by the Hands of God."
Industry Expansion to Support National Security
Something that I have been focused on, especially since Covid, is making sure that all of the products and components we need for our national security can be made here in the United States. One of those components is aluminum. So, I was excited to play a part in the expansion of Constellium in Muscle Shoals. I worked to get the company a $23 million contract from the Department of Defense. This will help us quickly ramp up production to meet critical national security needs from a trusted and reliable source. It will also bring new jobs to the Shoals.
New Industry and New Student Opportunities at Airport
A new aviation business is locating at the Cullman Airport. Martin Aviation specializes in on-site aircraft maintenance. They are building a 10,000 square foot hangar at the airport. Also, Wallace State Community College will have a new facility at the airport to help students train and seek careers in drone business or as it's referred to Unmanned Aircraft Systems.
Bridge Opening in Jasper
Drivers in Jasper and Walker County are glad that the new bridge on Alabama Highway 5 over U.S. 78 is finally open. I joined Governor Ivey and other elected leaders for the official ribbon cutting.
League of Cities Meeting
Mayors and city council members from all across the Fourth District gathered in Guntersville for my annual Washington update. This is the third year in a row that Guntersville has hosted this event. I of course enjoy getting to see and talk to everyone, but it's also good for local elected leaders from all over our district to get to talk and share ideas.
That wraps up this month's newsletter. I will be back in touch the first Saturday in October.
Until then, may God bless you and your loved ones.
Sincerely,
Robert B. Aderholt
