This May Day, Stand in Solidarity with Workers!
|
Howdy Comrade,
Workers at Amazon, Instacart, Whole Foods, and Target are striking on May 1st for safe working conditions, hazard pay, and more.
Support striking workers. Don't cross the picket line at Amazon, Instacart, Whole Foods, or Target. Encourage your friends and family to do the same. Read more about work conditions, the strike, and their demands.
Workers have counted far more sick coworkers than their employers let on, and bosses are not implementing the precautions needed to protect workers' lives. As socialists, we know that workers lives are more important than capitalists' profits. This moment requires us to organize for everyone's safety.
In solidarity, tomorrow's May Day trivia will be streamed on YouTube, not Twitch (which is owned by Amazon). Subscribe to the Houston DSA YouTube Channel or look us up tomorrow night.

Saturday Rally in Support of AFGE workers at the VA
|
This Saturday, the American Federation of Government Employees local 1633 is holding a car rally to demand that the federal government establish work-safe rules for the V.A., including adequate PPE, tele-work, testing, paid leave, and incentive/hazardous pay for all. They are inviting other unions to join them in solidarity, and we are asking you to show up as well. This will be a distanced rally with everyone attending in their cars, honking, and waving signs.
Join in on Saturday, May 2, at 10:30am at the Luby's on 288 and South Mac Gregor. (2400 South Mac Gregor Way, Houston, TX 77021) RSVP to [email protected] and bring a sign supporting one of the demands above.
Work Safe Rules for the VA will keep both health care workers and veterans receiving services safe. These are rules all working people need and that we are fighting to win in Harris County and the City of Houston. Hope to see you in your car Saturday at 10:30!

May Day, or International Workers Day in most of the world, is celebrated on May 1 and commemorates the Chicago Haymarket Affair in 1886.
On May 1, 1886, workers in Chicago began striking for an 8-hour workday. At a peaceful rally to support the strike on May 4, a bomb went off while police attempted to disperse the rally. The police officers took advantage of the confusion and fired upon the demonstrators, killing four and injuring as many as 70 of them. The government then used this as an opportunity to repress the successful and growing labor movement. Four organizers were executed, even though there was no evidence they were involved in any violence.
We face the same hostility and disregard for workers' lives today—and that's why we organize as workers and democratic socialists. This May Day, show off your historical knowledge and learn more from each other at May Day trivia.
