Dear MoveOn member,
What should have been a regular Wednesday morning for students and
administrators at Apalachee High School in Georgia turned tragic.
Two students and two teachers were killed because a 14-year-old had access
to an AR-15, a military-grade assault weapon, that allowed him to cause
death, injury, terror, and trauma.^1,2
Mass shootings like these can be prevented from happening again if we ban
assault rifles in this country. We don't have to continue like this. These
types of weapons were once banned, and we didn't face these frequent
tragedies.^3 It's time for Congress to bring that ban back immediately.

Despite what Trump, his staunch defenders, and the gun lobby may want us
to believe, this public health crisis is not normal and should never be.
Our children and school administrators deserve to go to school without the
fear of being gunned down. We also deserve to be out in public without the
fear of being shot.
Thoughts and prayers are not enough. Congress must reinstate the assault
weapons ban immediately. It worked in the past and can work again.

Public opinion is on our side. The majority of Americans are in support of
having commonsense gun laws, including the assault weapons ban.^4,5 The
reality is that other countries don't experience mass shootings the way
America does. And when they do, their governments take meaningful action,
in a way that ours is reluctant to do.
But with your help, we can change that. Our country has witnessed tragedy
after tragedy—and Congress has refused to take more action, despite
President Biden's being in support of their renewing the assault weapons
ban.^6
The thoughts and prayers of lawmakers will never be enough. We need them
to take action to protect our loved ones.

Thanks for all you do.
