** The final batch of primaries kicked off Sept. 3 in Massachusetts

On Sept. 3, Massachusetts voters chose nominees for one U.S. Senate seat and nine U.S. House districts. Democrats occupy both U.S. Senate seats and represent all nine U.S. House districts. Eight seats on the Governor's Council and all 200 seats of the Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) were also up for election. Democrats have a 36-4 majority in the state Senate and a 133-25 majority in the state House. Suffolk County also held primaries for a number of local offices.

** Judge issues injunction against Ohio legislation that would have prohibited lawful permanent residents from contributing to ballot measure campaigns
------------------------------------------------------------


U.S. District Court Judge Michael Watson issued an injunction on Aug. 31 against a provision of Ohio House Bill 1 (HB 1) that would have prohibited lawful permanent residents who are non-citizens from contributing to ballot measure campaigns.

Watson said that while Ohio has a compelling interest in preventing foreign influence over state political processes, restricting speech around ballot initiatives does not achieve that interest.

** New Hampshire has fewer state legislative primaries as national committees target state

In Wednesday’s Brew, we looked at elections in New Hampshire, one of the three final states holding primary elections on Sept. 10, along with Delaware and Rhode Island. New Hampshire voters will decide nominees for its two U.S. House districts, both legislative chambers, and governor.
