1. Reacted to the Apalachee High School Shooting

On Wednesday, a 14-year-old student opened fire in Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing two fellow students and two teachers. I am outraged by yet another act of senseless violence in our schools. A school should be the safest place to send your child. Instead, Americans live in fear each and every day of another mass shooting. Ultimately, this shooter should never have gained access to such a deadly weapon. Georgia has some of the weakest gun laws in the country, with no laws mandating safe storage or child access prevention. In Congress, we must take immediate steps to keep guns out of the wrong hands and keep our children safe. That is why I am a proud cosponsor of Ethan's Law, federal legislation to require safe storage of firearms to ensure that a child cannot get ahold of one and cause harm to themselves or others. It is critical that we turn our outrage into action. My deepest sympathies go out to the victims, their families, and those students who were forced to live through such a traumatizing experience. 

2. Attended the 44th Ward Seniors Picnic

On Thursday, I stopped by the 44th Ward Seniors Picnic to meet some folks and listen to their concerns about local issues. It was a great opportunity to share information about some of the services our office provides, including our upcoming Senior Fair! On September 17, federal, state, and local organizations will be present to offer resources to seniors. There will also be a clinic offering flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. The event will take place at the Northeast Levy Center (2019 W Lawrence Ave, Chicago) from 10:00 AM CT - 12:30 PM CT, with vaccinations beginning at 9:30 AM CT.

3. Toured a Community Project Funding Site

On Thursday, I visited Metra's Edgebrook Station, one of the 15 local sites I put forth for funding consideration last year. The station was included in my Community Project Funding requests for the 2024 fiscal year and was signed into law by President Biden this past March. As a result, Metra was awarded $1,200,000 to increase the comfort, efficiency, and accessibility of the Edgebrook Station along the Milwaukee District North (MD-N) Line. Renovations will also include a climate-controlled shelter for outbound commuters, multiple digital displays showing train arrivals, and safety messages accompanied by audio announcements for the vision and hearing impaired. I look forward to monitoring the progress of this project and one day seeing the positive impact it will have on commuters across our district.
