A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

Earlier this week, Rhode Island welcomed back Coach Joe Mazzulla, a native son of our great state, and the head coach of the 2024 NBA-champion Boston Celtics. On the steps of the State House, Governor McKee held a special celebration commemorating the Celtics' record-breaking 18th time lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

Joe's journey — from growing up in Rhode Island to leading one of the most storied franchises in NBA history — is nothing short of inspirational. His dedication, hard work, and commitment to teamwork are commendable. Joe’s achievements demonstrate that with grit and perseverance, anything is possible.

Our commemoration was a heartfelt tribute to Coach Joe's homecoming and celebration of the values that we all cherish as Rhode Islanders. When we celebrate the talents and successes of Rhode Islanders like Joe, we build a sense of local pride. As Joe noted in his remarks, so many people contributed to his success, from giving him rides to showing up at his games. He truly is a product of a community investing in its own.

Please join me in congratulating Coach Joe Mazzulla on his remarkable achievements and expressing our gratitude for the positive impact he has made on our community. I wish him continued success with our beloved Celtics and celebrate this moment as a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together as a community.

Sincerely,

September is National Suicide Prevention Month — a time to focus on rising suicide rates and the urgent need for better mental health care. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra recently spoke about efforts to address the issue through the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention plan.

Secretary Becerra also highlighted the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, as a beacon of hope that has already assisted millions. Mental health care is a critical aspect of our health care system that has long been overshadowed and underfunded. It is essential that we shift this narrative to dismantle stigmas associated with mental illness and make mental health services more accessible to everyone.

Amo Launches District Climate Policy Advisory Committee

Image

Congressman Gabe Amo with members of the District Climate Policy Advisory Committee

I'm excited to share that we've launched our District Climate Policy Advisory Committee. This diverse group of local environmental leaders will help guide our efforts to protect Rhode Island's natural beauty and tackle the challenges of climate change. Our committee will be instrumental in advising on federal funding priorities and ensuring we're on the right track when it comes to passing legislation that benefits our state.

Our Ocean State is home to over 400 miles of coastline and large inland watersheds. We are uniquely vulnerable to rising seas and more frequent and intense storms because of climate change. Thanks to the largest federal climate investment in history — the Inflation Reduction Act — we're poised to usher in a new era of action for our community. We all have a role to play in this effort to deliver clean, affordable, renewable energy for our neighbors, ensure safe drinking water, maintain our pristine shorelines, and advance our principles of environmental justice. I thank our committee members for their willingness to step up and lead at this critical juncture for our state.

Together, we'll work to protect our environment and ensure that Rhode Island remains resilient in the face of climate change. Thank you for being part of this vital work.
