Labor Day is a time-honored tradition where we as Americans recognize the hardworking men and women who are the backbone of our great nation. Weekly Column - September 6, 2024 Supporting the American Worker Labor Day is a time-honored tradition where we as Americans recognize the hardworking men and women who are the backbone of our great nation. From the productive apple orchards of Central Washington and the constantly innovating Hanford Site, to the manufacturing plants and businesses large and small across the country, it is their skill and dedication that drives our economy and strengthens our communities. But as we celebrate their achievements, it is also important to reaffirm our commitment to policies that support the workers. As you know, American workers have been facing significant challenges. Over the past year, job growth has been largely stagnant, 1.2 million Americans have lost their jobs, and the unemployment rate has risen to 4.3%. This is the highest level of joblessness since October 2021, occurring alongside rising prices and increasing difficulties for families who are struggling to make ends meet. As a responsible fiscal conservative, ensuring our economy works for our labor force is necessary. People work hard for their paychecks, and it is crucial that they can afford not just the essentials for daily life, but also have the means to save for future needs. Unfortunately, our current economic conditions make this difficult. One of the drivers of this is our national debt, which is approaching $35.3 trillion and translates to over $102,800 per person. These numbers are staggering and have been rapidly increasing in recent years due to irresponsible government spending. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have been fighting tirelessly to cut excessive spending, refocus funding on initiatives that will benefit Central Washingtonians and everyday Americans, and reverse the damage that has been caused in recent years. Together, alongside my Congressional colleagues, I have been working to stand strong against the demands for new unnecessary funding initiatives while working to support American workers. Now, it is time for the Senate to do their duty and pass the necessary appropriations bills so we can make the cuts needed to get our economy back on track. It is up to the federal government to swiftly change course and chart a path towards a better tomorrow—especially for the hardworking men and women who keep our nation on track. The Hanford employees advancing the nuclear innovation our region is so famous for, the agricultural workers providing the food that feeds our nation, and the restaurant servers bringing you dinner at the local spot in Kennewick—these people deserve an economy that works for them. In Congress, I remain committed to supporting legislation that incentivizes job creation and works to make our economy stronger. By ensuring our workers have the tools to succeed, we not only honor their contributions, but also build a more prosperous future for all Americans.
