Dear neighbor,
I am sending my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of those who died this week at Alpachee High School in Georgia due to yet another school shooting. I am devastated for the students who had just come back for summer vacation, eager to learn. We must not allow these horrors to be normalized. I am—as I have been since my first day in Congress—committed to passing comprehensive gun safety legislation that will help protect our communities from gun violence.
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting two local organizations for which I helped secure funding in recent federal legislation. First, I was pleased to visit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor and present them with a $1 million check for their Pathways to Success project. This program has a proven track record of supporting young people within our community as they prepare for college, job training, and beyond. With this new funding, BGCLAH will be able to reach even more local young people and help set them on a path to success.
I also joined the El Segundo City Council to highlight the funding I helped secure for their emergency preparedness efforts. Over $320,000 in federal resources will support improvements to El Segundo’s Emergency Operations Center Project and strengthen emergency and disaster preparedness. In the event of strong earthquakes or severe weather events caused by climate change, the Emergency Operations Center plays an essential role in the notification process for local officials and residents.
As the congressional representative for coastal Los Angeles County, it is a privilege to bring federal funds home to our community to support local governments and organizations who make our neighborhoods healthier and safer. PASSPORT MONTH: September is Passport Month, which is a perfect opportunity to make sure your passport is up to date and ready for holiday travel! Many countries require that your passport not expire within six months of travel. Any passport that expires in 2025 should be renewed.
To celebrate Passport Month, the State Department is hosting special events for passport applications across the country, including some on evenings and weekends! The Los Angeles Passport Agency will be open for a special application period on Saturday, September 14. To learn more, visit the State Department’s Passport Month events page.
I look forward to updating you again soon.
Warmly,
Ted
