# Scholars file amicus brief with the Supreme Court in Skrmetti case

([link removed])

On September 3, Williams Institute scholars with assistance from Selendy Gay, PLLC filed a
friend-of-the-court brief ([link removed])
with the Supreme Court in United States v. Skrmetti. In this case, the Court will decide whether Tennessee's ban on access to puberty-blocking medication and gender-affirming hormone therapy for transgender youth violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The brief provides information about transgender individuals in the U.S. and the impact of laws restricting access to gender-affirming health care. Scholars explain that the uneven distribution of state laws on gender-affirming care has led to unequal access to health care across regions and may disproportionately affect Black Americans.

Correction: A previous version of this newsletter mistakenly misidentified the law firm that provided assistance in this brief. We are grateful for the pro bono legal assistance from Selendy Gay, PLLC.
