Four people, two of them children only 14 years old, were killed with an assault weapon in their school in Winder, GA, this week. This is yet another preventable school shooting made possible by the negligence and inaction of lawmakers who choose to protect guns over children.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said he is "praying for the safety of those in our classrooms," but it is all too clear that our children are not safe in their schools when lax gun laws allow easy access to weapons of war. Two years ago, NRA-endorsed Kemp signed a bill into law to allow gun owners to carry a concealed handgun in public without first obtaining a license from the state.

JD Vance said school shootings are "a fact of life" – and, friend, we absolutely cannot accept constant school shootings as the norm in our country and we will not allow lawmakers to brush off this heinous tragedy.

These reactions are not only unacceptable, but an insult to the victims, survivors, and families of the tragedy at Apalachee High School. We don't need more empty thoughts and prayers, we need life-saving action. We cannot allow our lawmakers to sit idly by while our children are gunned down. Our country is failing our children: Gun violence is the number one cause of death for kids and teens. Kids shouldn't have to fear being gunned down in their schools – they should be safe and supported to learn and grow. We must change our country and stop constant mass shootings and death. Our kids, and all Americans, deserve better.

Two children and two teachers were killed with an assault rifle at school in Winder, GA. Nine more people were injured and all the children and faculty of Apalachee High School traumatized by another heinous school shooting.

This is a parent’s worst fear, sending a child to school where they are shot in their classroom and never come home. I am gripped with this very fear every day when I send my kids to school.

It’s our job as their parents – as grown ups – to protect our kids. All of our kids. And instead, we are failing them.

Our country continues to put guns over children’s lives. Politicians choose NRA blood-money and stonewalling life-saving legislation over protecting kids. No more. I won’t accept inaction from our lawmakers at the expense of mine or anyone else’s kids and I’m asking you to join me in calling for real change now.

More children should not have to die for our lawmakers to take action to end this gun violence epidemic.

I am coming to you as a Mom who fears for her kids safety at school; as an American who is ashamed of the inaction of our lawmakers; and as a gun violence survivor who knows the pain of losing a loved one to this epidemic. We cannot offer only thoughts and prayers or we risk another tragedy at a school and more children dead by gunfire. We must do something to stop this gun violence epidemic for our children’s sake. And for the sake of all Americans that we can still protect with life-saving action.
