Webinar: Designing Inclusive Apprenticeship Programs
As the saying goes, it takes a village. Or in the case of inclusive apprenticeships, an “ecosystem.” Join us on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at 3 p.m. ET, for a webinar on the ecosystem of partners—sponsors, government agencies, state and local workforce development agencies, workforce intermediaries and community organizations—that can help employers develop inclusive apprenticeship programs. Expanding these valuable “learn and earn” models of training is an ODEP priority. The webinar will share key findings from the Urban Institute’s Research to Support the Partnership for Inclusive Apprenticeship project, which looked at various approaches to designing and implementing inclusive apprenticeships.

DOL’s Christopher Mark Wins the Sammies Career Achievement Award
We’re celebrating our extraordinary colleague Christopher Mark in the Mine Safety and Health Administration for his tireless efforts to prevent deadly roof falls in coal mines. A former coal miner himself, Chris knew firsthand how notoriously unpredictable and risky mining was—and how little was understood about improving its safety. As a federal servant, he has led decades of research into mine stability and developed industry-wide standards and practices that today help avoid roof collapse and protect workers. In 2016, his work led to the first year in history that saw no American miner killed by a falling roof. Chris is the recipient of the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals (“Sammies”) 2024 Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Award.

Accommodating Educators with Disabilities
America’s students—and teachers—are back in school. For many educators with disabilities returning to the workplace, the need for job accommodations may be becoming clear. Both educators and employers can check out the recent newsletter from ODEP’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN) for resources and guidance on important accommodation-related topics like disclosure, requests and specific types of workplace accommodations.
