“We must seize this moment to dismantle the systemic barriers and relentless abuse that marginalize women and other disadvantaged groups,” our CEO Ghida Dagher wrote in The New York Weekly.

Read more about her reflections and the work that organizations like the Open Society Foundations are doing to empower young woman and decolonize pathways for progressive change.

Here are some of the amazing things the leaders in our network have recently achieved:

  • Melinda Liu (Ready to Lead® AAPI Women) officially made it on the ballot in her run for Irvine City Council District 1 and is looking for volunteers to support her campaign.

  • Maytham Alshadood (Ready to Lead® Midwest and Ready to Win® 2017, and NAL Trainer & Recruiter) is now the Director of the Business and Licensing Division at the Colorado Department of State!

  • Denver City Councilwoman Shontel Lewis (Ready to Win® Trainer) took action to combat hate in her community by working to quickly remove racist and anti-immigrant signage that had gone up in her district. The persistence of these harmful and hurtful caricatures is a reminder of why NAL’s movement to empower New Americans to build a more inclusive and representative democracy is so vital.

  • Karim Kadouh (Ready to Lead® Midwest and Ready to Win® 2023) was appointed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to the Michigan Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs!

  • Justin Onwenu (Ready to Lead® Midwest 2021) was named by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to become Detroit's first Director of Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunity!

  • Minnesota State Senator Zaynab Mohamed (Elected Advisory Council 2024) reflected on her past 2 years and the meaningful legislation she was able to pass for rideshare drivers and tenants, and for undocumented immigrants to finally obtain driver's licenses. Her next priority: to raise the state’s minimum wage.

  • Ivan Niño (Ready to Win® 2023, Ready to Lead® Northeast 2024) launched his campaign for City Representative in District 35 in El Paso, Texas!

Know someone who should be included in this list? Let us know! We're so proud of our NAL family for taking action to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy and would love to give everyone a shoutout!

Help fight systemic white supremacy by supporting our mission to get more women, immigrants, and underrepresented Americans on the ballot and into power.
