John,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today.

I want to express my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of Wednesday’s school shooting in Winder, Georgia – just a few miles outside my district.

I join you in grieving the innocent lives lost at Apalachee High School. This tragedy has sent a shockwave through our communities in Georgia and beyond.

No student or teacher should ever have to fear for their safety at school — a place of learning, growth, and hope for the future.

And no parent should ever send their child to school in the morning while worrying if they’ll make it home that day.

We cannot accept a reality where our schools become scenes of tragedy. We must do better.

Today, I pray for a better future where we can protect our students, educators, and communities from the horrors of gun violence.

With love,
Lucy
