* Michigan Residents Encouraged to Take Action to Prepare**
During Michigan’s Preparedness Month***
*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 6, 2024*
*LANSING, MICH*. Disasters and emergencies happen when we least expect them. That is why Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared September as Preparedness Month in Michigan [ [link removed] ], and the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is encouraging residents to take steps to prepare for emergencies.
Throughout September, the MSP/EMHSD is joining federal, state, and local governments, as well as private and public organizations, in supporting emergency preparedness initiatives. Agencies nationwide are uniting under the theme “Start a Conversation.” [ [link removed] ] The campaign is designed to spark conversations about emergencies and disasters to prompt individuals, families, and businesses to take more actions to prepare.
“In recent years, we have faced a lot of extreme weather from tornadoes causing extensive damage to Michigan homes and businesses to severe storms and flooding,” said Governor Whitmer. “Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration and countless local partners, we have the resources our communities need to recover and rebuild. This Preparedness Month, let’s take proactive action so we can be ready for anything the world throws at us. Talk to your loved ones, neighbors, and colleagues about your emergency plans now so we can all be better prepared if a disaster should strike.”
*2024 Prepare Fair in Allegan*
To put preparedness into action and commemorate Michigan’s Preparedness Month, the MSP/EMHSD is collaborating with Allegan County to host the 2024 Prepare Fair from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Padgham Field, 740 Grand St., Allegan, MI 49010.
Those who attend the fair will learn about local agencies that respond to emergencies, how to develop a family emergency plan and how to create an emergency preparedness kit. Attendees will also be able to meet local first responders and volunteers. The event is free of charge and open to anyone.
