According to Pen America, over 4,300 books were banned across 23 states and 52 public school districts in just the second half of last year. The vast majority of these bans target books that discuss race and racism, LGBTQ identities and experiences, and sex education. It's a clear attempt to control what ideas, experiences, and viewpoints students are allowed to read and learn about.

Preventing students from accessing information about issues that impact them and learning about the world around them because the government doesn't like the underlying information isn't just wrong – it's a violation of their First Amendment rights.

But right now we have an opportunity to help school districts fight back. Rep. Maxwell Frost, the U.S.'s first Gen Z Congressperson, has introduced the Fight Book Bans Act to enable the Department of Education to better support school districts fighting these dangerous censorship attempts.
