I am pleased to direct you to the first of several documents providing The School Nursing Role in Re-Entry Guidance. It is through the collaboration of many school nurses, affiliate leaders, board members and strategic partners that this work is possible. More documents will be developed over the course on the next several weeks that address the Role of State School Nurse Consultants, The Role of Affiliates, and critical collaborations for school nurses. We also have a petition open to fund 10,000 school nurses, and I encourage you to sign it and pass it along to your networks. Please sign NASN's petition to the White House to fund 10,000 school nurses for the upcoming school year now -- as the critical discussions on how this country reopens its schools in the recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic begin. A school nurse for nearly three decades, Pappas hadn’t seen anything like this before, so she reported her students’ symptoms to the New York City Health Department, as the New York Times reported at the time. She was later credited with discovering the first cluster of swine flu in the state. Her efforts sparked a national response to the looming H1N1 pandemic. In the face of public health crises, school nurses have a vital role to play, says Donna Mazyck, executive director of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN). In the age of the coronavirus, teaching kids how to wash their hands and cover their coughs is just the tip of the iceberg for school nurses. Mazyck says they're also expected to provide crucial medical expertise on infectious diseases and to help coordinate emergency responses at the district level. And although the virus has shuttered many schools altogether, many nurses continue to hold virtual appointments, providing families with both medical advice and a comforting presence in a time of uncertainty. Improving School Community and Student Health Nurses Are Trying to Save Us From the Virus, And From Ourselves In an era when no one seems to trust anyone, we trust nurses. “But I don’t think that means people really understand what nurses do,” says Laurie Combe, president of the National Association of School Nurses. It’s a complex job, requiring knowledge of both biochemistry and psychology, in myriad environments. Nurses are helping your fourth-grader learn to track her insulin levels at school, and they are putting pressure on a gunshot wound at 2 a.m. while noting that the victim has no pulse. They are monitoring both your heart rate and your spirit.
