Together, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are moving our country forward and fighting for working families.
Governor Walz, a tireless advocate for the middle class, brings a wealth of experience to the table. His journey began with enlisting in the Army National Guard at 17, where he served for 24 years, eventually rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major. After utilizing the GI Bill to attend college, Walz transitioned into a role as a high school teacher and football coach, leading his team to a historic state championship. His dedication continued as he represented farmers and rural communities in Congress and later, as Governor, enacted policies such as reducing insulin costs to $35, eliminating junk fees, and enacting paid leave. His commitment to fundamental rights, including protecting women’s reproductive freedom and supporting gun safety, underscores his effectiveness in public service.
Walz’s record in Minnesota demonstrates his dedication to improving life for middle-class families, from passing laws supporting reproductive rights to enhancing public safety with universal background checks for gun purchases. His life’s work—rooted in his upbringing on a family farm, his service as a National Guard soldier, and his commitment to education and community—reflects a deep understanding of the needs and values of everyday Americans. As he continues to work alongside Kamala Harris, their shared vision promises a future that upholds the rights and well-being of working families across the nation.
Join our canvassing team to knock on Democrats' doors in Indian River County. We will be notify voters of changes to vote-by-mail and share candidate and ballot measure information. If you are a Spanish speaker we need your help too. No experience is necessary and training is provided.
Ballot measure 3 would legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 years old and older. Individuals would be allowed to possess up to three ounces of marijuana (about 85 grams), with up to five grams in the form of concentrate. Existing Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers would be authorized under the initiative to sell marijuana to adults for personal use. The Florida State Legislature could provide by state law for the licensure of entities other than existing Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers to cultivate and sell marijuana products.[1]
Smart and Safe Florida is sponsoring the initiative. The campaign reported $61.28 million in contributions. Trulieve, a marijuana dispensary company that owns medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida, is the main contributor.[2] Smart & Safe Florida said, "The industry is sustainable and growing. In 2020, when the state lost more than 400,000 jobs, Florida’s cannabis industry added 15,000 employees. Tax revenues from the legal cannabis industry for federal and state governments are projected to reach $4.06 billion in 2025, according to New Frontier data. There is no evidence that legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use at the state level, as 37 states already have done, has boosted underage consumption from the regulated marketplace. The continued black market sale of marijuana perpetuates a culture of criminality. ... If adult-use cannabis is legalized, Florida users will have accountability, transparency, and regulations in place to ensure products are not laced with or contain potentially deadly chemicals."[3]
