Protecting Our Community From Scammers
Scammers are always looking for new ways to obtain our information and rip us off. I encourage people in our community to reach out to me for help dealing with scams. Earlier this summer, Gary from East Troy shared his story with me detailing his experience being targeted by scammers.
Gary explained he has received more than 175 scam calls on his landline since July 3rd. After hearing his concerns, I submitted congressional inquiries to the FCC and FTC to review and address Gary's situation.
Gary is one of many people who are being targeted by scammers. Roughly 21 million Americans reported having been personally victimized by scams in 2023. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission reported that consumers lost more than $10 billion to fraud in 2023, a 14% increase over the previous year and the first time that fraud losses have reached the $10 billion benchmark.
For the past several years, I have hosted a scam-prevention event to share resources that are available to prevent scams. I am also leading an effort to designate May 9th as National Scam Survivor Day to encourage a collaborative approach to support scam survivors and prevent future scams.
Until we are successful at ending scams, I will continue working to protect our community from scammers. I joined TMJ4 to discuss this work.

Keeping Cartels Out of Wisconsin
Over the last few years, migrants coming across the southern border have been moving to Wisconsin in significant numbers. The City of Whitewater, for example, is witnessing a dramatic increase in migrants flowing into the community. Especially troubling is that drug and human trafficking cartels appear to be moving in along with these migrants.
The Institute for Reforming Government (IRG) investigated the burdens placed on the City of Whitewater caused by America's broken immigration system. IRG's report shows in detail how the failure to secure the southern border has led to a cartel running illegal operations right here in Wisconsin.
According to Walworth County Undersheriff Tom Hausner, Walworth County has documented nearly $250 million in a four-month period that was funneled back to the cartel.
Today, I co-sponsored the Cartel and Radical Terrorist Enforcement Log (CARTEL) Act to help hinder cartels' ability to conduct illegal activities in our communities. Specifically, this legislation requires Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to report to Congress detailing which terrorist and cartel organizations are attempting to exploit our borders to move their members into the United States.
We must work to protect Wisconsin families from these deadly cartels, and I believe this legislation is one step that can be taken to bring security to our communities.
I joined CNN recently to discuss how the unsecure border is impacting us in Wisconsin. Click here to watch the full video.
